Part 2.1: Editing your details
Right after logging in you are going to see a page telling you some of your details may be out of date. This page will pop up every time after logging in. It is best to just go here and take care of the details right off so you don't have to deal with it later. It is also allot easier if you set your password to something you will actually remember instead of the auto-generated password the game gave you when you created your account.
You will have two buttons, a change details option and a ignore for now option. Choose the button to edit now. This will bring you to the details page, this is also accessible via the system tab at any point.
There are only a few options to edit on this page, they are all edit fields. You can jump between them with either E to jump by edit boxes, or with F to jump by forms. In order they are, first name, last name, email, ship name, new password, and confirm new password. Under the forms are two buttons, a save changes option and a return to game option. The fields for first name, last name, and Email will already be filled in, you need to give your ship a name and change your password to something you think of and can remember. After doing this you simply click on save options. It is worth mentioning, the ship name will be already filled in with the next "please name", you will want to delete that before entering your own ship name. Remember this is a more mature community and you don't want to make a ship name which is offensive as others can read this information.
After you fill in the fields and choose to save your options, the only remaining button will be the return to game option. Where the save options button was located will be a message that looks like this. "Name, Your account information has been updated.
As you have changed your password, it is recommended that you log out of the system then log back in again". I simply close the window and re-launch the game at this point. We will pick this back up after you have logged back into the game.
part 2.2: Turning on Blind/VI mode
After you log back into the game you will find yourself on the The promenade for Star Base 51. This is where everyone who joins the game starts, if you didn't read the screen reader pages I would suggest doing that now as I won't be going into great detail on the page layouts and the best way to navigate them using a reader.
To enable the blind/VI mode you are going to need to click on the captain/player bio graphical link in the bottom tool bar. You can find this easily by simply doing a search for the text "bio". This will take you directly to the link for the captain bio as it is the only string of text on the screen which contains the word "bio". Click on it and enter into your bio screen, in here is where you can toggle on or off the blind mode.
The easiest way to navigate this page is by jumping by B for button or F for forms. At the top you will have a bunch of buttons for different player stats, below those you will have options like, 5.png, sbhubs.png, VI / Blind Mode Disabled, tick.jpg, and acct.gif. These last 5 buttons are in their own table, so you can use table navigation commands to figure out what the unlabeled buttons do without any issues. Thee action for each button is located in the table cell above the button. The button you need to press is very well labeled however, simply click on the VI / Blind Mode Disabled button and it will change to say VI / Blind Mode Active. Don't leave this page yet, the next part will still require you to be on this page.
Part 2.3: Optimizing and customizing some jaws settings for best experience
One great thing about jaws is the ability to custom label buttons in the game. We'll do this with the unlabeled button "5.png" button just as an example. Using table commands it is easy to tell it is for processing a settlement reclaim.
Put your Jaws PC cursor on the 5.png button.
Press insert + f2 to open up the Jaws manager dialog.
Arrow down to Custom label and hit enter.
Type in the new name for the unlabeled button, for example "Settlement Reclaim" and hit enter.
You are done, now it will always read that button or any button like it as "settlement reclaim:" instead of 5.png.
You can do this with other unlabeled buttons when you run across them. But for now I'll have you do it with some other buttons on other pages which will help you down the road and clean up some things that are read as "dot png".
Exit your player bio by the last button on the page.
this puts you on the promenade for Star Base-51 again. Undock by pressing the "Undock from Starbase-51" button.
Now that you are in orbit within the Feris system, there are some buttons you can re-label.
First go to the button that reads as "stars2.png" and custom label that simply "Star".
next you will find some buttons at the bottom labeled as "navmove.png", re-label these to read as "Orbit".
The reason for these two re-labels are for easier reading and so the name actually matches what action clicking on the button will do. Labeling stars2.png to read as star is just for easier reading. Re-labeling navmove.png to Orbit is because clicking on that button simply puts you in orbit of the planet name to the right or below the button. This just makes it easier to understand, and also shortens what you have to listen to.
There is only one more thing you should go ahead and do now so you don't have to do it later. You need to set up how Jaws reads buttons, what value it reads out loud for buttons in the game. If you don't have this set right when you get into your starter combat NPC missions you won't be able to see the threat rating of the ships you fight. Fixing this is very simple.
When in your browser window press Insert + V to open up the quick settings dialog.
Hit Tab once to get into the Tree view for all of the settings.
Press B once to jump to the options for buttons.
hit space on this option to cycle through the different options until you get to "Buttons Show Using Alt Attribute".
then tab until you get to the Ok button and press it.
Part 2.4: Checking your mail and the parts of the mailbox
First just for simplicities' sake you are going to want to re-dock at Star Base-51. You should still be in orbit of it so simply re-click on the button for the star base, or click on the link "dock at star base-51".
The rest of this will assume you have read the basic page layout explanation and navigation. If you haven't I would suggest heading over to that page and reading how the pages are laid out and the best ways to navigate them with a screen reader. This is extremely important and not understanding it will make it very difficult to play the game. It is not difficult, it is just something you need to understand.
To access your mail you simply click on the mail graphical link which is at the top of the bottom/footer section. This will bring you into your mailbox. Before clicking on it if you want to check and see if you have any mail messages the number of unread messages is located directly under the mailbox graphic.
Since you just started you will have 5 mail messages once you enter into your mailbox. These are auto sent to every player who joins up, and you should take the time to read each one of them. Like with so much in Core-Exiles the messages are arranged into a table so it is easy to read them. To jump directly to the first message just hit B to jump by buttons until you reach the button labeled as "Message Highlight" button. If you click on this it will mark/flag this message and keep it at the top of your message list at all times.
The table is very self explanatory, the headers are:
Message Highlight.
Sent, the time it was sent/received.
Message From, who sent it to you.
Message Title.
Credits?, if attached the amount will show up in this cell.
Read, button for opening and reading the message.
Archive, to archive the message for up to 14 days.
Delete, there is no trash folder.
Read what should be the top message from coops titled A Few Points of Interest. Once you open it there is a quick way to jump directly to the top of the message so you can just read down with your arrows and only read the message and not the top or bottom of the page.
hit B to jump to the first button on the page, it is a Return to Mailbox button, don't click on it.
hit Shift + G to jump to the next previous graphic, this will be the assets tab.
Pressing down arrow once brings you to the top of the message.
This is a mail laying out some resources for the game to help you to learn it. After you read it choose the button to return to the mailbox, not delete. Once on the main mailbox screen archive the message you just read. This is better than deleting it because you can always go back and read it if necessary for 14 days. You will see other messages, you should read them all, they lay out some perks you can get and info on rewards to come very soon. Pay special attention to the message titled "Welcome to Core-Exiles" from "A.I Autobot". You need to read this as it tells you where to go for the next section of these guides, Part 3 completing your first NPC mission.
You will also find some links at the top of the table which contains all your mail messages. These are for the different mailbox folders where messages can be stored, Archived, notifications, outbox, and payments. Once you click on these once they will be a visited link and then you can simply jump directly to them from the top of the page by pressing V to jump to the next visited link. You will get plenty of notifications throughout your core-exiles career, so make sure to check there if you have messages showing next to your mailbox graphic but not private messages listed. Within your notifications the layout is pretty much the same, the only difference being that you don't have a highlight button.
In conclusion
This was the boring stuff, but it has to be done to make sure you can play the game fully. Again I need to stress how important it is to understand all the page layouts, you should head over to the Screen reader section to get a full understanding of the basic page layouts, the four tabs, the promenade, in orbit. It will make the game allot easier, and at this point having a understanding of those pages which you will see thousands of times can make the game allot easier.
Proceed to the next guide, Part 3 your first NPC mission.
Return to the guides home.
